Fun with characters

Calling all Loveday fans! Feel free to jump in and recommend actors for the roles of the leading characters. I am fascinated by the interesting suggestions. Don't be shy. There are NO wrong answers!

Marilyn S who is a regular contributor to the Loveday blog posted the above following our fun and interesting weekend participation in picking stars to play Loveday characters. I thought it deserved a second slot.

Love to hear your comments. Hope you like the pics of Richard Armitage and Rupert Penry-Jones. We've also had Chris Pine(the new Capt Kirk)nominated as Adam and the lovely Johnny Depp who could play a multi-role as all the Loveday men as far as I am concerned.

These posts are interesting. But in our imaginary cast it would not be a costume drama without Colin Firth (the legendary Darcy) He would make a great Edward. The books would not be the same without Elspeth. Dame Judi Dench or Maggie Smith would be perfect - what a shame Elspeth was not a twin and we could have both.

I definitely think we will have to find a role for Colin Firth. If he was not Edward he could be Captain William Loveday or Joshua. And what about George Clooney as one of the brothers.

Either Dames Judi or Maggie would be marvellous for Elspeth.

Has anyone any ideas for their arch enemy Harry Sawle. Who is your favourite villain?

Thank you for being such a good sport, Ms. Tremayne. I'm so glad that you have extended this amusing game.

AUNT ELSPETH: Sheila, I too picture Maggie Smith in this role. Good choice.

JOSHUA LOVEDAY: When I read about Joshua, my mind conjures up the image of Paul Giammati.

CAPTAIN WILLIAM LOVEDAY: Charles Shaughnessy (who played Maxwell Sheffield on the TV comedy "The Nanny") is who I picture in the role of Captain William Loveday.

HARRY SAWLE: When I read about Harry Sawle, I imagine a YOUNG Brian Dennehy. But which of today's young actors is like a young Brian Dennehy?

EDWARD LOVEDAY: Kate, you're right! No actor is better than Timothy Dalton in this role. Judging by my reaction to his image, one would think that the hot, wild Loveday blood pulsed through my veins too!!!

HARRY SAWLE FOUND!!!
Kate, I've been puzzling over your challenge -- namely, "Has anyone any ideas for their arch enemy Harry Sawle. Who is your favourite villain?"

After wrestling with this poser, it came to me in a moment of inspiration. For me, it would be RUSSELL CROWE. Check out the picture at:

Doesn't Russell Crowe just ooze Harry Sawle?

Your avid fans have "nominated" many wonderful actors for your Loveday characters. So many, in fact, that it appears you'll have to introduce even more characters from the Loveday line so all of our actor "nominees" can have a role.

You seem to know the Loveday characters as well as I do Marilyn. Thanks again for your interesting post. Russell Crowe as Harry Sawle was so spot on. I had wondered about a mean and moody Sean Bean rather than his dashing Sharpe image, but Russell Crowe would be far more menacing.

Peter Loveday. I also saw him as handsome but with a more boyish face. The young David Essex would be perfect. It is so hard to find modern actors that fit the images I had 11 years ago when I created the characters.

I vote for Russell Crowe as Harry Sawle and Seab Bean as his brother Clem. Davud Essex is gorgeous and would have made a great Peter.

This FUN WITH CHARACTERS game has been a hoot! Believe me, if I had the money and know-how, I would produce your books into a multi-season TV series.

I can see how having in mind a particular actor helps flesh out the character. Is the same true for the settings? For example, in the Cornish World Magazine interview you said, "I picture each scene like a huge movie screen in front of me." Is there a particular estate that inspired Trevowan and Boscable? Is there an image to which I can refer?

A loyal U.S. fan and "Ambassador" for all your lovely LOVEDAY books

Lisa, fantastic idea! In that way, BOTH Crowe AND Bean could star in our "fantasy feature."

A master plan Lisa to have Russell Crowe and Sean Bean as the notorious Sawle brothers.

As to the houses Marilyn I have very strong images for these. Trevowan was modelled on Athelhampton Hall in Dorset. If you go into old posts in July 2008 I put up a picture of the hardback of The Loveday Trials. We were given permission by Athelhampton to use the picture of the house. More on the web about this house.

Boscabel is based on Cotehele in Cornwall another Tudor mansion and part of the National Trust. It also has the arched entrance in the wall. Both of these are favourites places of mine to visit.

Marilyn S. said...

Thank you, Kate, for the house references. I am eager to research on the internet the real-life estates that inspired Trevowan and Boscabel.

If grown men can play "Fantasy Football", there's no reason why we can't play "Fantasy Feature Film." So, for CALEPH, I "nominate" Hugh Jackman or Daniel Day Lewis.

Loveday fans, in your opinion, what actor best embodies the character of St. John? Any suggestions?

In the previous post Kay has put forward Brad Pitt for a choice. Perhaps he would make a good St John. Good choices for Caleph, Marilyn. He returns at a particularly dramatic time in The Loveday Conspiracy.

I am eagerly awaiting the publication of The Loveday Conspiracy. Having found in The Loveday Secrets that the long lost cousin Tristan is absolutely intriguing (and I hope he will feature strongly in the future as this is a superb damaged soul, complex and enigmatic)I would like to nominate Hugh Jackman for Tristan. If this fantasy film we are devising was ever to be produced women would need smelling salts and tranquilisers issued before viewing so as not to swoon or suffer undue palpitations with so many gorgeous men on screen.

It has been great fun reading the comments.

Thank you for your comments Donna. I have enjoyed and welcomed all the reader participation in this post. All of you have been great.

Hugh Jackman would be great for Tristan. He is complex, both dastardly and redeeming and very enigmatic which makes him a great new personality to bring fresh conflict and adventures into the series.

I love the way author extraordinaire Kate Tremayne encourages all her readers/bloggers to visuallize in their own way the Loveday characters. Having now finished reading the first seven of the Loveday books, I have settled in my mind who *MY* Adam and *MY* St. John are:

ADAM: Chris Pine
http://chris-pine.org/2008/12/

ST. JOHN: Gerard Butler
http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity-photos/gerard-butler/?gallery=21111&photo=f1fe0476-212e-4588-ba71-756dd67ed8bb

I will carry these two mental images with me for Books 8, 9, 10 .... and hopefully many more!!!

kate tremayne said...

Good idea Marilyn, if Brad Pitt is unavailable to play St John due to a heavy work schedule, Gerald Butler would be perfect. He looks enough like Chris Pine who would make a fabulous Adam to pass as his non-identical twin. I'm delighted you have enjoyed our game, you certainly worked hard to give us all good insights into the visual images of the characters.

But in the Loveday world each readers creates, it must be their favourite stars who play the roles each of you think fit them best.

Hi Kate, regarding your characters . . .

Will Meriel's sister ever make an appearance in your books?

Admittedly, I have only just begun Book #8, so perhaps my question is answered in Books 8-10.

kate tremayne said...

Marilyn, you have dragged up a ghost from the past and at a very opportune moment. I had always intended to use Rose but other subplots got in the way. There could well be a place for her in the book I am currently writing.

Marilyn S. said...

Dear Ms. Tremayne,I'm glad to know that Rose may have a place in an upcoming Loveday book. I surmised that she was introduced with some long-range purpose in mind. You are too masterful a writer to do otherwise.

I guess that ghosts have been on my mind! First, I mentioned Rose and you said that I have "dragged up a ghost". Then, my attention was captured when Adam dreamed (in the Prologue of Loveday Revenge) of Edward materializing out of the darkness.

Seriously now, have you ever given thought to having one of your deceased characters -- such as Meriel or Lisette -- reappear as a ghost? It need not be hokey. For example, the ghost in *The Story of Edgar Sawtelle* was done skillfully. And I just KNOW that you could pull it off artfully!

kate tremayne said...

Hi Marilyn, Thanks for your confidence in me. I'm not sure about a physical ghost appearing. Although Senara would sense their presence as she did when they first entered Boscabel where a previous owner had been hanged from the gate arch.

Edward died before his time and he greatly shaped Adam's attitude and sense of what is right. I do believe that with such strong bonds our subconscious keeps a link with the the departed we have loved and we do seem to receive guidance when it is needed.
